Endangered Wolves Get a Second Chance During Give to the Max

For Immediate Release:

Endangered Wolves Get a Second Chance During Give to the Max

Stacy, MN / November 9th, 2022 – For Give to the Max day on November 17th, the Wildlife Science Center (WSC) is highlighting our exciting and critical role in the captive breeding and reintroduction of both endangered Mexican gray wolves and endangered red wolves. The wild populations are currently suffering from lack of genetic diversity and continued animosity from humans, so are heavily dependent on captive wolves to continue to provide new animals for release. The Wildlife Science Center is proud to be the only facility in Minnesota that participates in both recovery programs by providing a safe, healthy place for red wolf and Mexican gray wolves to stay until the time comes for them to join their wild kin.

Both species suffered from human persecution, and were declared ecologically extinct in 1979. There were 11 red wolves and 7 Mexican gray wolves left in the wild. Those animals were gathered up by the federal government with the intent to increase the population for an eventual reintroduction. Both reintroductions finally happened, the red wolf in 1987 and the Mexican wolf in 1998.

This year, WSC was thrilled to welcome a sassy red wolf puppy we have named Wanda, after the character in the Marvel movies. She was the only puppy in her litter, born on May 17th, 2022. Wanda may be wild one day, and we all look forward to hearing of her adventures!

We are able to be a part of this national project because of support from our wonderful donors, who make it possible for puppies like Wanda to get a chance to once again run free in their homeland. Donors are invited to continue supporting our work through a donation that works for them. Give to the Max offers one way to donate, but supporters can also go to our website if they wish to donate directly. We thank all of our donors for being a part of our pack, and for supporting our endangered wolves!

About Give to the Max Day

Give to the Max Day was created in 2009 to launch GiveMN, a collaborative venture led by Minnesota Community Foundation and many other organizations committed to helping make Minnesota a better place. That initial spark touched off an outpouring of generosity — $14 million in 24 hours. Since then, Give to the Max Day has become Minnesota’s annual giving holiday, raising more than $250 million in its first 13 years. Every year, thousands of organizations and individuals generate donations and excitement for Minnesota causes that are working to improve the quality of life for all Minnesotans.

About the Wildlife Science Center:

The Wildlife Science Center, founded in 1991 as a non-profit, serves as an educational resource for all ages by providing exposure to a variety of wild animals, including the largest resident wolf population in the United States. WSC, located just north of the Twin Cities in Stacy, Minnesota, is home to wolves, mountain lions, lynx, fox, bears, raptors and many other wild animals that, due to a variety of individual circumstances, are unable to be returned to the wild. Our facilities provide a unique backdrop for learning for wildlife management professionals, conservation agencies, school and other educational programs, and the general public.

WSC Contributes to Turtle and Tortoise Study Challenging Evolutionary Theories of Aging

For Immediate Release

Conservation Research: Wildlife Science Center Contributes to Turtle and Tortoise Study Challenging Evolutionary Theories of Aging

Even though humans live longer lives compared to their historical counterparts, we cannot escape the inevitability of aging. However, testudines – the order to which tortoises and turtles belong – may buck this trend by following a different pattern of aging compared to humans and other species.

In a new study published in the journal Science, researchers used data contributed by the Wildlife Science Center in collaboration with other zoos and aquariums to examine 52 species of turtles and tortoises. The data recorded by the Wildlife Science Center in the Species360 Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS) enabled researchers to discover that, unlike humans and other species, turtles and tortoises defy common evolutionary theories and may reduce the rate of aging in response to improvements in environmental conditions.

Evolutionary theories of aging predict that all living organisms weaken and deteriorate with age (a process known as senescence) – and eventually die. Now, using data captured by the Wildlife Science Center and others, researchers from the Species360 Conservation Science Alliance and the University of Southern Denmark show that certain animal species, such as turtles and tortoises, may exhibit slower or even absent senescence when their living conditions improve.

Out of 52 turtle and tortoise species, 75% show extremely slow senescence, while 80% have slower senescence than modern humans.

"We find that some of these species can reduce their rate of aging in response to the improved living conditions found in zoos and aquariums, compared to the wild," said study co-author, Prof. Dalia Conde, Species360 Director of Science, Head of the Species360 Conservation Science Alliance. “In addition, modern zoological organizations play an important role in conservation, education and research, and this study shows the immense value of zoos and aquariums keeping records for the advancement of science.”

Wildlife Science Center Executive Director Peggy Callahan shared that “as part of our commitment to conservation and animal welfare, our organization records data on the animals in our collection to ensure our animals are well cared for and can contribute to species population management and conservation. We are proud that the data we have collected and curated on the turtles and tortoises in our collection has contributed to this study, and helped researchers better understand aging in these species.”

The Wildlife Science Center is a member of Species360, a non-profit organization which maintains the Zoological Information Management Systems (ZIMS) – the largest database on wildlife in human care. As part of Wildlife Science Center’s commitment to conservation and providing high standards of animal welfare, it uses ZIMS to keep detailed records of its animal collections. And as a holder of both turtles and tortoises, the Wildlife Science Center has actively collected and shared data in ZIMS on this species which has directly contributed to this study.

Turtles keep growing after sexual maturity

Some evolutionary theories predict that senescence appears after sexual maturity as a trade-off between the energy an individual invests in repairing damages in its cells and tissues and the energy it invests in reproduction, so its genes are passed to the next generations.

This trade-off implies, among other things, that, after reaching sexual maturity, individuals stop growing and start experiencing senescence, a gradual deterioration of bodily functions with age.

Theories predict that such trade-offs are unavoidable, and thus senescence is inevitable. In fact, this prediction has been confirmed for several species, particularly mammals and birds.

However, organisms that keep growing after sexual maturity, such as turtles and tortoises, are believed to have the potential to keep investing in repairing cellular damages and are thus thought to be ideal candidates for reducing and even avoiding the harmful effects of aging.

"It is worth noting that the fact that some species of turtle and tortoise show negligible senescence does not mean they are immortal; it only means that their risk of death does not increase with age, but it is still larger than zero. In short, all of them will eventually die due to unavoidable causes of mortality such as illness," said another of the researchers behind the study, Dr. Fernando Colchero, Principal Statistical Analyst, Species360 Conservation Science Alliance, and Associate Professor at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Southern Denmark.

Wildlife Science Center Wolves Moving to Como Park Zoo

For Immediate Release:

Wildlife Science Center Wolves Moving to Como Park Zoo

Stacy, MN September 10, 2021 – On September 15, 2021, the Wildlife Science Center will continue our long-term partnership with Como Park Zoo by donating two wolves to their zoo. These two beautiful male wolves will be on exhibit at the Como Park Zoo as ambassadors of their species. The wolves will provide zoo visitors with an opportunity to learn about this majestic species and how we can learn to co-exist with them. Wolves are an important member of our ecosystem in Minnesota, and they often are misunderstood. The Wildlife Science Center continues to share their unique knowledge, research and conservation efforts with their community partners such as the Como Park Zoo.

The last two wolves donated by WSC lived full lives well into their teens and educated thousands of people, young and old. WSC is thrilled to be able to provide these spectacular ambassadors with the thousands of visitors to Como Park Zoo This gift to Como Park Zoo aligns with the mission of the Wildlife Science Center. To serve as an educational resource for all ages; by: providing exposure to wild animals and the body of knowledge generated for their conservation; to advance understanding of wild animal biology through long-term, humane scientific studies on captive populations, thus contributing to technical training for wildlife agencies, educational institutions and conservation agencies.

Wolves will arrive at Como September 15, 2021 at 9:30 am
